Brandon Zelaya Propels De Anza Force Past Real Colorado Into U-16/17 Quarterfinals

A 102nd minute goal from Brandon Zelaya lifted De Anza Force to a 2-1 victory in extra time over Real Colorado on Tuesday evening at the 2019 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Boys U-16/17 Quarterfinals in Oceanside, Calif. After Fernando Morales gave Real Colorado the lead in the opening 45, James Wangsness equalized in the second half to force extra time where Zelaya provided the winner for De Anza Force.

It was a cagey start to the quarterfinal as neither goalkeeper was called upon to make a save in the opening 40 minutes of the contest.

In the 22nd minute, Aaron Edwards for De Anza Force collected the ball in a little bit of space outside the box and let fly a shot that rose harmlessly over the crossbar.

De Anza Force had another chance in the 37th minute as a free kick just on the edge of the box setup a chance for Louis Rogers, but his shot came back off the wall. A pair of rebound chances were also deflected before they were able to get through to Real Colorado goalkeeper Jacob Morris as the game remained scoreless.

Real Colorado went in front in the 42nd minute as Morales converted from the penalty spot. Cade Cowan drew the penalty as he was taken down in the box off the first corner of the game for the Colorado side. Morales stepped up and went down the middle with the penalty, giving Real Colorado a 1-0 lead.

In the second minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half, a header for De Anza Force's Brennan Mallett was acrobatically tipped over the crossbar by Morris to allow Real Colorado to take a 1-0 lead into the interval.

Real Colorado had the first chance after halftime as Trevor Wright rose above the crowd to get his head to a corner, flashing it just wide as the lead remained 1-0 in the 51st minute.

Two minutes later, De Anza Force was level as Wangsness blasted a shot past Morris to even the game. An initial chance rebounded out to Wangsness right at the top of the box and he struck it with his first touch, tying the game 1-1 in the 53rd minute.

With the game back tied, chances once again became few and far between as neither side was able to find a winner before the end of the 90 minutes.

De Anza Force broke the deadlock in the 102nd minute on a goal from Zelaya. Edwards had the ball running at the Real Colorado defense and slipped it into the diagonal run of Zelaya who just beat an onrushing Morris to it, poking it past the Real Colorado goalkeeper give put the Northern California side in front, 2-1.

In the second period of extra time, Real Colorado maintained the majority of the possession as they chased the game, with the best chance falling to Wright in the 114th minute, but his header went wide.

In stoppage time in extra time, De Anza Force goalkeeper Damien Alguera had to be quick off his line thwart a potential chance for Real Colorado, but Alguera did well to read the play as De Anza Force held on for the 2-1 victory.

With the win, De Anza Force advances to the 2019 Development Academy Championships, July 8-11, in Irvine, Calif.
