Following a nationwide Fall Group Stage, 32 teams qualified to the Winter Cup and were drawn into eight groups of four teams. The eight group winners will advance to the Spring Cup with the chance to be crowned the inaugural DA Cup champion. More information on the Winter Cup tournament format can be found here.

Talk about leaving it late.

Ethan Smoak scored in the 89th minutes to lift Richmond United to a 1-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo on the third day of action at the Allstate Development Academy Boys U-16/17 Winter Cup on Friday.

David Cole started the winning scoring sequence with a long throw-in from the right side. While the ball was headed away from the net by a Dynamo defender, Smoak gathered the loose ball at the top of the box and powered a shot past goalkeeper Gustavo Otero.

The game was dominated by defense.

When either team pushed forward, chances were at a premium as their scoring attempts were stopped by the opposing defense or their shots went well off-target.

The Dynamo's best chance came in the 17th minute as Kieran Sargeant sent a 20-free kick around a four-man wall but straight into the arms of goalkeeper Dominic Hankle. Hankle came up big for Richmond in the 65th minute as he parried away Ryan Mahon's shot to keep the game scoreless.
