OAKWOOD SOCCER CLUB U-18/19 COMES BACK TO TOP NEW YORK RED BULLS IN WINTER CUP FEATURE GAME OPENER

By Michael Lewis

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla., (Dec. 4, 2019)- Goals by the O'Brien brothers and a late penalty-kick save helped boost Oakwood Soccer Club to a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on the opening day of the Allstate U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Cup on Wednesday. Ronan and Pearse O'Brien scored on either side of halftime and goalkeeper Mick Sipples stopped a penalty for Oakwood in the 78th minute in the Group B clash.

The teams traded first-half goals, with the Red Bulls striking first in the 17th minute as Conner Maurer headed home a corner kick past Sipples for a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute after a Red Bulls goal from Dantouma Toure was nullified due to an offside call, Oakwood equalized as Ronan O'Brien slotted home a loose ball from 12 yards out in the 35th minute.

Despite being outplayed for the most of the second half, Oakwood made the most of a rare opportunity as Pearse O'Brien broke the 1-1 tie off a counterattack in the 66th minute. After racing down the left flank, he sent a shot from the edge of the six-yard box past goalkeeper Alex Bobocea into the lower right corner.

The Red Bulls had a chance to knot things up late when they were awarded a penalty kick. Sipples, however, dove to his right to deny John Tolkin with a leg save in the 78th minute.
