CADE COWELL LEADS SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES U-16/17 TO OPENING DAY VICTORY AT ALLSTATE WINTER CUP

By Michael Lewis

Following a nationwide Fall Group Stage, 32 teams qualified to the Winter Cup and were drawn into eight groups of four teams. The eight group winners will advance to the Spring Cup with the chance to be crowned the inaugural DA Cup champion. More information on the Winter Cup tournament format can be found here.

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (Dec. 4, 2019)-A nosebleed and the Shattuck-St. Mary's defense couldn't stop Cade Cowell from finding the back of the net on Wednesday. Cowell scored twice, once in each half, and set up another goal to pace the San Jose Earthquakes to a 3-1 triumph on the opening day of the 2019 Allstate U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Cup in a U-18/19 Group D clash.

The Earthquakes and Cowell, who signed with the club as a Homegrown Player in January, wasted little time finding the back of the net. The 17-year-old attacker fired a shot from the left side of the penalty area past goalkeeper Xavier Valdez to score in the first minute.

With the wind at its back, San Jose controlled possession for the rest of the first half, but couldn't solve the Shattuck defense to add to its lead.

Cowell was forced from the match for several minutes midway through the first half due to a nosebleed before returning to action. His return was impactful for San Jose, as he turned playmaker in the 55th minute when Eduardo Blancas put away Cowell's left-wing cross at the right edge of the goalkeepers' box to double the lead.

Shattuck sliced the lead in half on the hour, although it took two penalty-kick attempts to accomplish it. After San Jose's Connor Gist knocked down a player in the area, Shattuck was awarded a penalty. Wylie Trujilo took the attempt, but goalkeeper Erik De La Cerda dove to his right to save the shot. Trujilo then blasted the rebound over the crossbar.

The referees, however, ruled that De La Cerda had moved forward off his line on the spot kick, so Trujilo was given another opportunity. This time the 17-year-old didn't miss, depositing the ball into the lower right corner as De La Cerda dove in the opposite direction in the 60th.

Cowell took center stage again in the 71st, scoring on a brilliant individual effort. He latched onto a pass in midfield and raced straight down the center of the field, splitting three defenders before depositing the ball into the net as the Quakes reestablished their two-goal margin.
