Bryan Silva’s 90th Minute Winner Completes 3-2 Comeback for United Futbol Academy

After trailing 2-0 just over 30 minutes in, United Futbol Academy got two goals from John Franks and a 90th minute winner from Bryan Silva to stun Sporting Kansas City, 3-2, in their Group B opener on Tuesday at the 2019 U.S. Soccer Development Academy U-16/17 Playoffs. Franks scored in the 43rd minute and again in the 76th to set the table for Silva’s winner just before stoppage time.

United Futbol Academy clawed its first goal back Two minutes before intermission. After creating a turnover and quickly flooding forward with a quartet of attackers. Asparuh Slavov threaded a perfect pass across the top of the box to Franks who tucked a shot inside the near post and got United Futbol Academy back into the match just before halftime.

The late first half goal helped United Futbol Academy work its way into the game, and the Southeast Division Champions saw much more of the ball in the early stages of the second 45.

In the 56th minute, that possession helped generate a chance, and Colin Thomas nearly got in on goal, However, the Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Gavin Krenecki was quick off his line to smother the ball.

As the match crossed over the hour mark, play became more stretched with United Futbol Academy searching for the tying goal and Sporting Kansas City looking to take advantage on quick counter attacks going the other way.

United Futbol Academy found the next goal as Franks picked up his second of the evening in the 76th minute. as Franks pounced on a header from Akinjide Awujo to tie the game at 2-2. Awujo’s deft header from near the top of the box was perfectly placed into the run of Franks who was able to put his left-footed first touch past Krenecki to level the game.

United Futbol Academy completed the comeback in the 90th minute on a perfectly placed shot low into the corner by Silva to win the game for the Southeast Division champions. Orrett Maine started the play for UFA by creating a turnover in midfield and powering through a Sporting Kansas City defender to find Awujo.  Awujo earned his second assist of the game when he played a ball to the top of the box for Silva, who snaked around a defender and scored to give his side the victory.

Early in the contest, It was the MLS Academy side that opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Danny Goddard went on a long run down the left side and wasn’t closed down by any United Futbol Academy defenders. He made his way into the box and slotted a shot past goalkeeper Ryan Schewe to give Sporting Kansas City the 1-0 lead just inside the first quarter-hour of the contest.

Sporting Kansas City doubled the lead just past the half-hour mark as Dylan Hooper’s header gave SKC a 2-0 lead. Tucker Lepley delivered a diagonal free kick into the box and it was Hooper that reacted quickest, rising above the United Futbol Academy defense to power home a header, and putting Sporting Kansas City up 2-0 in the 32nd minute.

United Futbol Academy created its first real chance of the opening stanza in the 38th minute when Thomas Zukaras got in behind and held off a Sporting Kansas City defender before letting fly a right-footed effort that rose over the crossbar.

That chance seemed to help bring UFA back into the contest as five minutes later they trimmed the Sporting Kansas City lead in half before completing the dramatic comeback after the break.

Both teams will return to action on Thursday in the second round of games in Group B. United Futbol Academy will play Strikers FC while Sporting Kansas City faces FC United Soccer Club. Kickoff of those games is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PT.
