Shattuck-St. Mary’s picked up right where they left off in the regular season as it recorded a 2-0 victory over FC Golden State on Tuesday afternoon in the Group G Feature Game at the 2019 U.S. Soccer Development Academy U-16/17 Playoffs. Matthew Roou and Connor Gist scored the goals, and the Mid-America Division champions, who have allowed just 13 goals all season, got off to a winning start in Oceanside.

It took top-seeded Shattuck-St. Mary’s just 10 minutes to go in front as terrific combination play from Erick Villatoro and Wylie Trujillo setup Matthew Roou for the early tally. Near the top of the box, Villatoro laid a ball off to Trujillo who played it into the stride of Roou whose right-footed shot beat FC Golden State goalkeeper Cody Aung and gave Shattuck-St. Mary’s a 1-0 lead.

A turnover in a dangerous area by Shattuck-St. Mary’s led to a free kick from just outside the top of the box for FC Golden State in the 17th minute, but the shot from Diego Arrieta went just high.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s had a chance to double its advantage in the 27th minute when Daniel Massey played a ball into the feet of Roou in the box and he nearly caught Aung leaning the wrong way, Aung managed to get a hand on the shot and prevent the Shattuck-St. Mary’s attacker from netting his second of the game.

Just before the half-hour mark FC Golden State had a good look at goal when Marvin Gamez fed a ball to Edgardo Artero but his shot went harmlessly high.

Five minutes before the interval FC Golden State had a great chance to pull level as a turnover in the back forced Shattuck-St. Mary’s goalkeeper Mitchell Budler off his line. Gamez pounced on the ball for FC Golden State and rounded Budler into space, but his chance was cleared off the line by the Shattuck-St. Mary’s defense and kept the Sabres with a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Aung made an excellent save for FC Golden State in the 56th minute to keep the California side close. Cade Thomson whipped in a corner for Shattuck-St. Mary’s and Antino Lopez got his head on it, but Aung was able to parry the header away to keep FC Golden State within a goal.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s had another chance in the 63rd minute when Connor Gist stepped around one defender and found a streaking Andrew Soczynski, Soczynski fired a shot with his first touch that had to be knocked out for a corner by Aung. FC Golden State would clear the resulting corner.

In the 77th minute, Gamez setup a chance for Juan Bonola of FC Golden State, but Lopez headed it away for Shattuck-St. Mary’s before the shot could reach the goal of Budler.

Gist doubled the advantage for Shattuck-St. Mary’s nine minutes before full time. Curling a shot past an outstretched Aung and into the corner of the net, Gist put his Minnesota side in front 2-0. Gist received the ball in front of goal off a feed from the right side by Roou and tucked the ball into the net to secure the three points for Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

Both clubs will be back in action for the second round of group matches on Thursday, June 20. Shattuck St. Mary’s will meet D.C. United while FC Golden State plays Orlando City SC. Both of those matches will kickoff at 1 p.m. PT.
