U-16/17 ACADEMY PLAYOFFS: WHAT TO WATCH FOR

By Jeremy Reid on June 19, 2018

The 2017-18 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season culminates with the Summer Showcase and Playoffs, beginning this week at SoCal Sports Complex in Oceanside, Calif. Here are some of the things to look out for in the Boys U-16/17 Playoffs.

FC DALLAS LEADS THE WAY

With a 23-1-1 record this season, FC Dallas heads to the Academy Playoffs as the top overall seed. Unbeaten in its last 15 games (14-0-1), FC Dallas suffered its lone defeat against New York City FC, 2-1, at the Winter Showcase. With 86 goals scored and just 14 conceded, FC Dallas easily paces the field in the Frontier Division.

FC Dallas has been drawn into Group F in the playoffs. Their first game against Crew SC Academy will be one of Tuesday's feature games, streamed live on ussoccerda.com, the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Facebook page and the U.S. Soccer YouTube Channel, at 2:30 p.m. PT.

FC Dallas will also face Chargers Soccer Club on Thursday and LA Galaxy on Saturday.

BEST OF THE REST

Behind FC Dallas, perhaps the hottest team entering the U-16/17 Playoffs is Sockers FC. Winners of 10 consecutive games, Sockers FC comfortably won the Mid-America Division, suffering its last loss on March 25, when they fell, 1-0, to Crew SC Academy Wolves. Sockers FC are the top seed in Group B, where they are paired with Weston FC, Baltimore Armour and Oakwood Soccer Club.

Sockers FC will meet Oakwood Soccer Club in their Academy Playoffs opener on Tuesday before squaring off with Baltimore Armour on Thursday and Weston FC on Saturday.

Another club leading the chase of FC Dallas is the high-scoring Seattle Sounders FC. Winners of the Northwest Division, Seattle Sounders FC scored an Academy-high 115 goals and had a +81 goal difference. Seattle Sounders FC is in Group C where they will meet Concorde Fire on Tuesday, Sporting Kansas City on Thursday and Pateadores on Saturday.

Elsewhere in Group C, the matchup between Pateadores, runners-up in the Southwest Division, and Sporting Kansas City, winners of three of their last four games in the regular season, will be one of Tuesday's feature games, streamed live at 5:30 p.m. PT.

SURF'S UP IN SAN DIEGO

Victories over Real So Cal (3-1) and Albion SC (3-0) in its final two regular season games helped ensure that local club, San Diego Surf, would be a part of the Academy Playoffs in their own backyard at SoCal Sports Complex. The two wins gave San Diego Surf the 10th of 11 available wildcard spots in the playoffs.

San Diego Surf will play in Group D, where they open against Colorado Rapids on Tuesday before meeting Sacramento Republic FC on Thursday and Crew SC Academy Wolves on Saturday.

The matchup with Sacramento Republic FC will be one of Thursday's feature games, streamed live at 5:30 p.m. PT.

LATE PUSH TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS

Following an uneven 8-7-2 start to the season, Players Development Academy (PDA) went unbeaten in its last eight games to secure a wildcard spot in the Academy Playoffs.

PDA last suffered a loss on April 21, falling to New York Red Bulls, 2-0, and since that time have compiled a 6-0-2 record. On May 26, PDA avenged that loss to Red Bulls with a 1-0 victory, beginning a streak of three consecutive shutouts to end the regular season.

PDA was drawn into Group E for the 2018 U-16/17 Academy Playoffs and will face Saint Louis FC Academy on Tuesday, Montreal Impact FC on Thursday and Carolina Rapids on Saturday.

LOCAL RIVALS SET TO CLASH IN GROUP G

The Hudson River Derby will take center stage in Group G where New York Red Bulls, winners of the Atlantic Division, will meet New York City FC.

The two New York City area clubs are joined in Group G by North Carolina FC Youth and Houston Dynamo. New York Red Bulls will face Houston Dynamo on Tuesday and North Carolina FC Youth on Thursday; New York City FC meets North Carolina FC Youth on Tuesday and Houston Dynamo on Thursday.

The clash between the Hudson River rivals is set to take place in Saturday's final round of group play.
