Playoffs Action Highlights Day Three of the 2017 Development Academy Summer Showcase and Playoffs

Playoff action got underway on the third day of the 2017 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Summer Showcase and Playoffs. With action in both the U-15/16 and U-17/18 Playoffs, along with the opening day of the U-15/16 Showcase, Grand Park's 31 fields were filled with action throughout the day.

A total of 53 games between the Playoffs and Showcase took place on Thursday with 159 total goals scored, an average of 3.0 goals per game. In the playoffs, 13 games were decided by one goal and six more ended in draws to help setup another important day in the playoffs on Saturday.

In the first feature game of the day between Sockers FC and New York Red Bulls in the U-15/16 Playoffs, Joshua Penn gave Sockers FC a first half lead before Jack Valderrabano canceled it out with a second half strike for New York as Sockers FC and the Red Bulls earned one point each in Group H.

Thursday's second feature game saw the hometown club, Indiana Fire, defeat Players Development Academy, 3-0, in Group G of the U-17/18 Academy Playoffs. Justin Ingram, Parker Washburn and Thomas Warr scored for the Fire as the large and vocal home crowd helped lift them to a group-opening victory in front of 750 spectators.

The 2015-16 champions in both U-15/16 and U-17/18, FC Dallas, returned to defend their crowns at both age groups. The FC Dallas U-15/16 team fell behind 2-0 against Baltimore Armour before storming back with five goals to earn a 5-2 victory in Group F. In the U-17/18 Playoffs, Austin DaSilva's 30th minute goal helped lift Beachside Soccer Club to a 1-0 victory over FC Dallas in Group C.

Highlights were happening all over Grand Park, but perhaps no highlight was more spectacular than Alejandro Pereira's 90th minute bicycle kick goal for Orlando City SC U-17/18 in a 2-0 victory over Pateadores U-17/18. ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10 Plays of the Night took notice, putting the ridiculous display of athleticism at number one.

Another crowd favorite that drew over 200 fans to Grand Park's field 10 was the U-17/18 Playoffs matchup between Atlanta United and LA Galaxy. Rostering two prominent U.S. Soccer Youth National team players and homegrown signings in Andrew Carleton and Lagos Kunga, Atlanta United looked to be the early favorite. Despite the Georgia fire power, LA Galaxy proved that no MLS team is an easy task, drawing the number one overall seed in the U-17/18 Playoffs, 1-1.

U-15/16 Group A contenders will move on to Saturday's second round of games in a four-way tie. After Atlanta United's younger side tied Montreal Impact FC 1-1, Chicago Fire and Players Development Academy also split points after a scoreless 80 minutes.

A total of seven number 4 seeds began their journey to the Academy Championships in winning form, upsetting their number 1 seeded counterparts: Beachside Soccer Club (1-0; FC Dallas), Texans SC Houston (3-2; Montreal Impact FC), Crossfire Premier (5-2; New England Revolution), Seattle Sounders FC (1-0; New York Red Bulls), Colorado Rapids (3-2; Baltimore Armour), Chicago Fire (4-2; Capital Area Railhawks - CASL), Real So Cal (2-0; Philadelphia Union).

The entire fleet of U-15/16 and U-17/18 teams at the 2017 Development Academy Playoffs will take Friday off to rest and recover before returning to action on Saturday.
